Q Station

Breezeway at Q Station, Manly, NSW, Australia

~*~

Q Station is a boutique hotel located at the former North Head Quarantine Station outside of Sydney. It’s a unique and most enjoyable lodging, packed with compelling history and a few rumoured ghosts.

Worth a visit if you’re ever in the area.

Be well …

Dramatically Angular … Sydney Opera House

Weekly Photo Challenge: Angular

~*~

~*~

The opera house ~ on the stage and in the hallways echo the dramas of life and vision and creativity.

The Sydney Opera House immediately comes to mind as a place of great theatrical drama, spectacularly reflected in all its dramatic, angular, architectural glory.

One little story … the tour guide told us that when the great (and superstitious) tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, sang at the opera house in 1983 he could not be persuaded to walk on the purple carpet because it was the same colour as coffin lining.

That, my friends, is a dramatic angle …

Window of Time

Tourists

~*~

For Leanne Cole’s Monochrome Madness Week 28 I’ve selected an image taken while on a guided tour of the Sydney Opera House.

This magnificent music venue perched on Sydney Harbour is a marvel of design and construction, and offers all kinds of interesting photographic opportunities.

On tours my tendency is to lag behind, my eyes and imagination caught for far longer than the guide’s strict window of time allows. Still, what I miss in the commentary I gain through my own observation.

Everybody’s Going Surfing

Weekly Photo Challenge: Dialogue

~*~

Everybody's Going Surfing

The second part of my response to this challenge also takes place in Australia, this time on the beautiful beach at Manly.

I am not a surfer … I’m not even that comfortable in water (unless it’s an infinity pool 😉 … ) so I’m always intrigued by those who are prepared to go out there and wrestle with the aquatic elements.

A school of surfers carrying highly identifiable surfboards head into the breakers with their instructor. A colourful sight indeed.

Surf Rescue

Meanwhile, a little further down the beach stands SURF RESCUE … just in case.

That’s a dialogue that speaks volumes. 😉

The Art of Zigzag

Weekly Photo Challenge: Zigzag

~*~

For this week’s challenge three completely different travel destinations come to mind.

Each an artistic representation of the beauty of the Zigzag.

Enjoy!

St. Stephen's

Vienna, Austria … where the impressive multi-colour zigzag of the tile roof at St. Stephen’s Cathedral dominates the Stephansplatz …

~*~

Monterosso al Mare

Monterosso al Mare, Italy … where colourful shade umbrellas zigzag across the popular Italian riviera beach …

~*~

Sydney Opera House

Sydney, Australia ~ With a Twist

Weekly Photo Challenge: Twist

I’m not sure why, but when I saw that this week’s challenge I immediately thought of our vacation in Sydney, Australia, and recalled the many shapes and textures that garnish this beautiful city.

A beautiful city with a twist.

Jacaranda

Jacaranda

~*~

It is the ugliest time of year here in southern Ontario.

Melting snow reveals another layer of broken tree limbs after December’s brutal ice storm.

Layers of grit coat sidewalks and gardens.

The general landscape is grey and, in some cases, even a rusted brown colour where evergreens suffered during the extended periods of intense cold we experienced this winter.

As we await spring rains to wash away the grit and warming sunshine to tempt the buds and grasses to grow, I find some consolation in revisiting my photo archives.

There I find colourful images of spring in countries we have visited, their vibrant colours reminding me that soon our own backyards will once again burst with colour.

I know it’s autumn in the southern hemisphere at present, but I couldn’t resist featuring this beautiful Australian spring delight ~ the Jacaranda tree.

Window Pain … Hyde Park Barracks Museum, Sydney, Australia

Weekly Photo Challenge: Window

~*~

~*~

On a trip to Sydney, Australia, several months ago, we stopped by the Hyde Park Barracks Museum to catch a glimpse of history.

These images were taken in the upstairs rooms. The silhouettes of convicts standing (and suffering) by the window were so fantastic with the light behind them I just had to capture them.

Minute Moments

Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadow … The Creeping Storm … Manly, Australia

The topic of this week’s Weekly Photo Challenge is Foreshadow.

To me foreshadowing sounds ominous. I think of the cloak of darkness rather than the shedding of light.

For this challenge I’ve elected to post this image taken from our verandah at the amazing Q Station in Sydney Harbour National Park at Manly, where we stayed for most of our two-week visit to the Sydney area last November.

Dusk was approaching and with it this companion creeping storm.

Talk about the foreshadowing of something ominous.
