Weekly Photo Challenge: Ornate
~*~
When I think of ornate my mind immediately drifts to the big, old churches of Europe. Every time I visit one of these ancient sacred spaces I stand in awe at what the master craftsmen of old accomplished under such punishing circumstances.
How DID they do it?!!
As Northern Europe’s largest consecrated Medieval Gothic space, York Minster is also one of the world’s largest Medieval Gothic Cathedrals. It took 250 years complete.
The Lantern Tower, at its centre, was built 1407-1423.
It’s height is 235 feet (71m).
At 16,000 metric tons, it weighs about the same as 40 jumbo jets.*
For an interesting look at other British historic events that occurred during the construction of the Lantern Tower, check out TimeLine.

*About Travel … Fantastic Facts about York Minster
~*~
Since taking on the stewardship of a horse farm two months ago, it’s been fun to explore it’s many beautiful spaces, both man-made and natural.
One of my favourite spots is the century bank barn. It’s a cathedral built to farm life. A shelter for the animals (in our case, horses). A storage for feed and machinery. A place to step into another time as its century beams and boards and vaulted roof draw us in to musing and meditation.
All my life I have dreamt of having a century barn.
I’m still pinching myself.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Orange
~*~
The stained glass of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona is stunning. Its rich colours warm and embracing. Little wonder my thoughts turned to this beautiful church for a spot of orange.
~*~
The area around the organ is surrounded by plexiglass. I suspect this acts as a baffle, but it also has its place as a mirror for all that gorgeous orange stained glass.

Everywhere you are, there it is.
Perhaps orange is the new black. 😉

The ancient symmetry of beautiful York Minster
~*~
~*~
~*~
I’m always in awe when surveying the construction and workmanship of these ancient sacred spaces.
Their symmetry is perfect. Just how did those architects, stonemasons and engineers do this way back when?
It’s kind of humbling to think that this incredible edifice, which has already been here hundreds of years, will be here long after I’m gone.

This is my entry for Leanne Cole’s Monochrome Madness Week 13.
One of my favourite activities when travelling in Europe is to visit the great cathedrals and other beautiful places of worship ~ the Sagrada Famlia nestled in the heart of Barcelona among them.
Originally designed by famed Catalonian architect, Antoni Gaudi, and with construction beginning in 1882, this amazing edifice is slated for completion around 2026.
Though the interior is not yet finished, for a fee tourists are able to go inside and see the miracle unfold. The Sagrada Familia is an expiatory project which is to say the building of it is completely funded by private donations and the millions of visitors who flock to see it every year.
I featured several images from my visit some time ago in a weekly photo challenge. This is one of my favourites.
The Sagrada Familia is well worth some of your time if you’re ever in beautiful Barcelona.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside
I have a passion for ancient structures. To me there’s something magical about a place that has stood the test of time.
Salisbury Cathedral happens to be one of those places.
We had the good fortune to visit the cathedral for an afternoon last fall. It was a particular thrill for me as I’d just finished reading Sarum ~ the epic historical novel by Edward Rutherfurd documenting the history of the area, including the construction of this impressive religious structure.
If you’re interested in learning more about Salisbury Cathedral, which was consecrated at this site in 1220 and boasts the highest spire in England (at 404 ft/123m) visit the History page of the cathedral’s official website.
