I’m not the only one in our home who loves tulips.

JJ thinks they make a tasty snack.

Tulip Time

Tulip Riot

~*~

It has been a dull and dreary day here in Southern Ontario, and I feel for a splash of colour.

Thank goodness tulip time.

Few things thrill me more in spring than to witness, and capture, a beautiful tulip’s evolution from tight bud to blooming flower.

It is a miracle, to be sure.

More to follow.

A Slice of Winter and A Wish For Spring

The Green Barn

I have tried to avoid the subject of winter because we’ve had so much of it this year. Still, here it is. Let’s look it in the eye.

Mountains of snow. Treacherous ice in amounts not seen in decades. Temps below zero for such an extended period of time my beautiful rhododendron, sadly, has finally given up the ghost.

(I hope the greenhouses are well stocked for a spring rush.)

Winter

Normal temperatures for this time of year range in the 1C area. Today we’re deep in another polar vortex that’s going to take us through until Saturday. We’re talking -15C with a wind chill of -25C. Triple-blanketing weather for my horse who’s already shedding his winter coat.

Which way?

A dear friend in England sent me a note yesterday in which she included the cheerful news that the first snowdrops had begun to show. I can only dream of a blanket of snowdrops when I’m staring at a bank of snow.

It’s going to take a long time for this mess to disappear.

Still, the days are getting longer. My horse continues to shed his winter coat. And little by little the snow, and the three inches of ice underneath, is melting. (But not today, of course.)

Let’s end on a happy note.

Longed For Tulips

I’m looking forward to seeing these purple darlings in my garden again.

Stay warm. Stay dry. Be happy.

Take Heart …

Smiling Tulip

It’s been such a glorious day here in Southern Ontario. In answer to the warmer conditions the tulips are nosing their way out of the ground and the crocuses are already bursting in purple hue.

While I await the varie-coloured adornment of my garden with this year’s crop of cheerful bulb flowers, I enjoy the vase of colourful tulips nestled inside on the coffee table.

Tulips have no scent but, truthfully, I don’t believe they need one. Their interaction with the light in the slow dance of spring is enough to brighten my spirits. To watch them blossom over days from buds to blooms is one of life’s many miracles. A scent, perhaps, would be overkill.

So, herewith a rendering of my favourite spring flower, heart open and leaning into the light, engaged in the loving slow waltz of life as only a tulip is able.

Take heart and lean into the light, in these challenging times, and engage with the flowers.

Portrait of a Tulip … Happy Easter!

Tulip b&w

This week’s Weekly Photo Challenge looks like a lark, but I’m not participating … at least not today. Maybe I’ll do it some other time when I’m feeling up to it.

Having spent yet another day down and out with an adrenal meltdown, (the second in two weeks) I feel the need to conserve my reserves of energy for something less demanding of my time and creativity.

So, I turn to a portrait of a tulip — spring’s quintessential bloom — for some inspiration.

Tulips are my favourite spring flower and while I wait for them to festoon the garden I buy bunches at the local supermarket and display them in the living room. I always feel cheered as I walk by and notice how they’ve changed since the last time I saw them. From buds to full blooms of amazing colour combinations.

They also remind me of our trip to Holland a couple of years ago, and wandering the vast grounds and gorgeous floral displays of the Keukenhof.

So, with this small token, which you can imagine to be any colour you like, I wish you a happy Easter weekend, whatever that might mean to you.

Be well and thanks for visiting …

Dorothy 🙂
