I have so many fond memories of my travels to Italy. This beautiful country has inspired my growth as a human being and my creativity as a photographer. For that I will always be grateful.
Here are just a few images as a loving tribute to this richly cultured country as it negotiates this unprecedented moment in its history.
Viva Italia!

I must be an old soul for I love the ancient places.
Take me to Italy or Ireland (see previous post) any day.
Coincidentally, or not, I’m currently reading Roma, Steven Saylor’s epic novel on the history of Rome. Which reminds me it’s time to go back and take a fresh slate of pictures.

As long as we judge the world from the narrow perspective of our past, particularly negative, experiences we will never be able to engage with the light of new, life-affirming possibilities.
To move beyond our tunnel vision is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves.

Four gondoliers wait for their next fare on the Grand Canal in Venice.
I’ve been waiting a long time for an opportunity to feature this image. It’s one of my favourites from our 2014 trip to Italy. Every time I see it I think of Gilbert and Sullivan’s light opera “The Gondoliers” ~ possibly because it looks like, at any moment, these fab four might burst into song.

Part of the challenge of travelling is baggage handling, and this is certainly true in Venezia.
There are so many stairs!!

Part of the romance of Venezia is, of course, the gondola ride.
My experience has been that the best time to head out onto the silent Venetian waters in one of these iconic water vessels is around the twilight hour. While the darkness and boat movement do present a photography challenge the point is that by this time of day the cruise shippers have all returned to their boats and the canal jams are virtually non-existent. No hustle. No bustle. Just utter peace and pure Venetian atmosphere as the gondola is gently guided by practiced hands through the small channels and waterways that lace their way through this incredible ancient city.
But don’t take my word for it. If you’re going to Venizia, save your pennies (gondola rides are expensive, though both times we’ve been split the cost with another couple) and arrange for a magical gondola ride at twilight.
It’s worth every penny.
